Every new year most of us set up new goals and often fail to even start the process to accomplish the goal. Why does this happen? Well there are 2 reasons for it.
Firstly, you may think new year is my new chance to erase everything that I did last year and so you may set some unrealistic goals. For example – if a person is obese and living an unhealthy lifestyle. This person sets a goal of getting six packs in just 3 months. Well attention please ‘Time To Introspect’ you haven’t been exercising for years and now suddenly you aim for a six pack body? Instead how about keeping a goal of starting a healthy lifestyle first.
Secondly, you may want something that someone else has, it could be a bigger house, more wealth or a richer car or even a more beautiful wife;) When you set a goal not knowing whether you want it or not, you will land up getting confused about how to achieve this because of lack of clarity and hence lack of conviction.
This is what I am suggesting – Instead of setting up new goals for new years, how about getting better than what you were last year? When I say better than last year, I am talking about what you want to become this year. When you become what you want everything comes from within you, instead of goals and wishes coming from external influences.
James Clear, the author of the book ‘Atomic Habits’ has beautifully mentioned that when habits are outcome based/goal based, these habits are difficult to keep up for more than a few days, even with lots of effort and motivation. He has also effectively written that many people begin the process of adapting to habits by focusing on what they want instead they could focus on what they wish to become. Even world-wide well-known coaches say first become what you want to be and then set goals, thus set your habits to accomplish these goals.
But the question is what exactly does it mean by ‘Become what you want to be? How can I know myself or what I am ?’ Lets chunk this down step by step – To become what you want is to understand what you are, what are your values, what are your beliefs, what kind of person you are, what are your thoughts, how you think of others, how you treat people, how much do you believe in yourself and more! As you are reading this, take these above questions one at a time and answer them. Take your time to answer these questions to yourself. Write it down if that gives you better clarity. It may happen that for every single question asked above, you might take like one day or days for getting clarity. Just be with it and only work on getting more and more clarity. Once you know answers to all these above questions, now you know what person you are, maybe a tiny bit 😉 Priests and monks say to understand self to conquer self it does take one whole life sometimes and I am assuming we all don’t want to just live this one life to know yourself completely, instead we all want to contribute too. So this tiny bit of knowing yourself is still a very fruitful idea. After reading this painstaking introspection, only then ask yourself ‘What do I want from this life I am living?’ And my dear readers, the answer will just flow naturally, indeed effortlessly.
Conclusion: Knowing yourself and to become what you want isn’t a one day or one month or one year process. It’s an everyday process. So first on priority, set up that process. For example, if your value is health then make sure eating healthy food and exercising daily is your daily process. If your value is abundance then make sure you work daily on how I can make my time and energy worthy to earn more, understand your skill set and contribute at the same time keep improving your skill sets. This way you will make everyday, every hour, every minute, every second worth living for yourself.
